The hobbit: The battle of five armies

Alas, the movie: The hobbit was finally out on viooz and I couldn't wait to watch it. At first it was a bit of a blur but I didn't mind, I just wanted to watch the movie. A few minutes into the movie I realized it was Spanish and I got sooo angry and I just watched penguins of Madagascar.

A Hurtful Day

I wake up slightly dizzy in the morning, I felt sleepy but still wide awake and the feeling it was giving me was weird. I got up had and did my usual thing, look for the computer as I was searching the room I thought I saw what I was looking, not sure what if I were correct I bent down and pow. My lips felt lumpy painful, I quickly rushed toward the mirror and my lips was bleeding. A few days later I it cept getting dry. I told my sister about it and she laughed, I regretted looking for the computer.

On a Wednesday morning at Pt England there is a program called future aspirations. There are some people here see us and there names where Anthony Sameuls, Paula Fakalata, and amelia Unufe. They were telling us about there journey to how they got they're jobs, It was quite entertaining and funny.

Kowhaiwhai (From Auckland Museum) 12+

What is Kowhaiwhai?

Kowhaiwhai are beautiful painted design patterns. At first, kowhaiwhai patterns can be viewed as decoration only, but closer examination shows that they involve sophisticated mathematical precision.  These patterns include symmetry, rotation, reflection and translation.

The koru or pitau is the most basic design element of kowhaiwhai. These are curving stalks with bulbs at one end. They bear a striking resemblance to the young shoot of a native fern.

After the koru or pitau, the next main motif or pattern of kowhaiwhai is the crescent or kape. This  is characterised by a line of evenly placed white circles on the outer edge of the crescent.

The koru or pitau and the kape, are all that make up the list of basic kowhaiwhai motifs. However when used in various combinations these two patterns can create many varying designs of incredible depth.

An Artform

Stories that explain the origin of kowhaiwhai all say that it is an art form secondary in importance to  woodcarving (whakairo) and tattooing (ta moko). When kowhaiwhai is compared to wood-carving and tattooing, there are several contrasts.  Apart from the obvious differences of how they are created, kowhaiwhai is seen as something more temporary. It is not seen as having  lasting value, so requires no special ritual and no formal training. It is considered to be a common (noa) activity and so therefore, can be carried out by anyone.

The colours red, black and white are often the only colours that appear in kowhaiwhai patterns. Red was obtained by mixing red ochre with shark-liver oil.  Black paint was made by mixing shark oil with powdered charcoal. For white paint, taioma or pipeclay was burned then pulverised and mixed with oil.

Origins

One oral account from Ngati Kahungunu, traces the origin of both wood-carving and kowhaiwhai. It tells us that:

When Whiro, Haepuru and Haematua climbed up to the second heaven to obtain carvings for their house, they were told by one of the gods that the art of decorating houses with wood carvings had already been taken away by their younger brothers. Whiro and his two friends complained to the god that they could not go begging to their younger brothers for the art, so the god showed them how to embellish a house with painted designs.

Whiro and the others then descended and adorned their own house with painted designs.( Best (1982:287-8…)

Toi Uri

On week one of term four Ms Tito introduced us to a new game called ‘Toi Uri’. It’s a fun and exciting game when you have four dots on each side of the field and both teams have to try and get all four dots on top of each other. The aim of the game is to pass the key and use it wisely.

Firstly, to score a dot you have to have one of your team members standing on one of the dots of the opposite teams side once they’ve arrived, try and give them the ball but don’t get too close because there’s a limit between you and the scorer. Also don’t throw it too high or won’t be a score because if the scorer catches it in mid air and then lands on the dot, it’s a no goal.

Next thing you need to know is the key. The key is everything in the game, if you don’t know what I’m talking about you’ll find out, The key is the ball, the reason why it’s called the key is because it’s thrown around a lot and to throw it you need to communicate a lot with your team mate.

To find out more about this game, then search it up on google or youtube, it’s your choice. Also the game is called Toi Uri, it’s a maori game that my teacher taught me. It’s really cool and I prefer you to try it out and try to get in the game. Don’t just stand around and be a statue.

Immersion Assembly

First day of school again, I wake up in the morning nice and fresh. I get to school just in time. I walk in to class ready to pumped into the morning, I was exited about immersion assembly because you never know what the teachers have ready for you. The topic was art attack, when we got inside there where speed painting being shown on the screen and I have to say, the graphics are amazing and the shades are spectacular.

I help my brother when he get’s hurt outside, sharing food with my siblings and letting them on my psp. helping them with things like maths problems, spelling things and others. I sometimes help my big sister work in the kitchen. That’s how I show empathy at home.

life ed

In week one of term 3, class 3 attended their first session in the life education caravan to learn about what decisions we should make in life. We mainly learnt about drugs and which ones are good and which ones are bad. We also learnt what it does to us.

The body needs a lot of protein’s to work properly. it’s most fragile state is in puberty when there is a lot of stress on the body. In the life ed caravan we found out that that when you take drugs, it slows down the neurons which makes your body think slow like for e.g: there’s a man at the pedestrian and you see him so you slow and get ready to stop but that message hasn’t yet reached the brain so you keep going and by the time you stop, the man has already been hit.

We learnt that in life there are a lot of hard decisions that we come across like following your freinds and doing bad things like drugs and alcohol. If your friends start drugs then it’s best to stay away from them or else you’ll get addicted or they might hurt you one day. The best thing is to not choose drugs and have fun with your family, or end up in jail and have a miserable life.

The brain is very fragile in puberty and there’s a lot of pressure on you. drugs affect the brain by slowing down messages, making you angry, you feel emotional and changes your behavior. you sometimes forget who you are or laugh at stupid things. If you hurt yourself then you wouldn’t sense anything but later you’d feel the pain.

Conclusion: In life ed we learned something that goes like this: drugs don’t choose people, people choose drugs. james was a boy who died from drinking one whole bottle of kings. In the third session we learned that sometimes someone offers you something but you don’t know what it is so you eat it instead of using your sense’s to try and find out what it is.

Commonwealth Games Explanation

The Commonwealth games is a  competition that only Commonwealth countries can compete in. Commonwealth countries are the countries that used to be ruled by the British empire.There are 53 countries in the commonwealth games. The first Commonwealth games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.

The Commonwealth had lots of names, in 1950 the games were known as British empire games, then it was called the British Empire and Commonwealth Games,then the British Commonwealth Games. Then in 1978, the games were held in Edmonton, Canada. That’s when they changed the name to Commonwealth Games.

Every four years, the place’s where it’s held change’s. They choose were it's held by having a vote. In 2018 it will be held in Australia’s gold coast. It’s going to be amazing and I hope I can also go their and watch the show. The Commonwealth Games for 2014 are coming to an end and I have enjoyed watching it online with my brothers.
